Run for the Cure!

Hey everyone,

On Sunday, we participated in the Run for the Cure with Alex's mom (Kathy).  We signed up for the 5km run and raised money in honour of Lynne Small, a close friend of Kathy's.  It had been a while since we had gone for a run (as we have been swimming a lot lately for our cardio), so it was exciting to get outside and be a part of this event.

When we showed up at the event, it was packed with thousands of people.  It was great to see so many people out in support of this good cause.  After getting our t-shirts and inscribing them with Lynne's name, we made our way over to the start line.

There was a palpable energy in the crowd, as groups of people clustered together, chatting and getting ready for the run.  It was a cool morning and although the clouds threatened rain, we only experienced a light mist.

As the organizers led us through a warm-up and then a countdown to start the run, we surged forward.  It was quite crowded at the outset of the race - thousands of people seemed to be running and the line stretched far ahead.  After a couple of kilometres, the runners had spread out somewhat and it was easier to pass other groups.

We kept a steady pace, picking it up when we rounded the corner and were on the home stretch.  In the last kilometre, we significantly increased the pace.  As the finish line came into sight, we put on a final burst and finished strong as a team, with the encouragement and cheers of hundreds of spectators - what a feeling!

We were very pleased to do this run.  Beyond the fitness benefit and the joy of being outside for the exercise, it was for a great cause.  We'd like to thank those who donated to support us as runners.  It was such a good experience that we've already started discussing how we'll do it next year.  We are thinking of putting together a team  - this would require 10+ runners in total.  Are you interested?  Let us know!
