Fitness Challenge: "Beep Test" Workout

Hey everyone,

Remember back in high school gym class when you participated in a fitness assessment once or twice a year? You had to complete tasks such as push-ups and sit-ups - and the dreaded "beep" test...

For this test, everyone started off by lining up on one side of the gymnasium. Then you ran from one end to the other, timed by "beeps" that sounded closer and closer together (i.e. diminshing periods of time).  Rest periods became shorter as the "beeps" came faster, until it was no longer possible to run the length of the gym before the next "beep" sounded. This post's fitness challenge is inspired by our memories of those beep tests!

We have chosen two different exercises, the pull-up and the push-up to demonstrate this fitness challenge.  However, you can perform it with any exercise of your choosing.  The video below explains the challenge.

As you saw, in this fitness challenge the time period will stay the same (for simplicity we're using a one-minute period). For the pull-up variation, start off with one pull-up in the first minute, two pull-ups in the second minute, three pull-ups in the third minute, and so on. For push-ups, we have demonstrated it with increments of five reps (e.g. 5 push-ups in the first minute, 10 push-ups in the second minute...). All you need is a watch or timer to get started. Feel free to change up the exercises and rep ranges to suit your fitness level.

This is a great way to challenge yourself in particular exercises.  Record your score and see how you improve over time.  Give the "Beep Test" fitness challenge a try and let us know what you think!

  1. Can you tell me if there's any truth to the following two beliefs regarding working out:

    1. You have to change your strength training workout regularly or your muscles become 'lazy' and used to the workout.
    2. A steady cardio workout (ie 30 minutes steady jogging on the treadmill) isn't effective. In order to be effective you need to do high intesity interval training.

    Thanks,

    Nicole
