Hard vs. Simple

Hey everyone,

Over the last couple of days, we did two very different workouts.  In both cases, we came home from work and weren't really feeling in the mood to exercise.  By taking a few minutes to mentally move past the workday, have a snack, and motivate each other, we committed to working out.  Again, this is an example of where working out as a couple (or with a friend) can help you stay committed to your fitness.

For the first workout, we were looking for something quick and easy.  We picked an AR7 lower body workout.  In hindsight, this workout wasn't quick, or easy.  It was a great challenge though!  Here is what we did:

  • Double kettlebell front squats (Tannys - 2x 12kg, Alex - 2x 24kg)
  • Straight leg deadlifts (Tannys - 40kg, Alex - 185lbs)
  • Bench jumps

It sounds easy on paper - but it nearly killed us.  Remember that in our version of an AR7 workout, you move in a circuit through the exercises with little to no rest, performing 7 reps of each (for 7 circuits), then 6 circuits of 6 reps, and 5 of 5.  We had trouble walking after this workout...

So, the following day, after we had again psyched ourselves up for a workout, we purposefully chose a different workout style!  For this workout, we focused on simplicity - picking 4 different, basic upper body exercises and doing 3 sets of each.  Here's what we did:

  • Parallel chins
    • Tannys - bodyweight
    • Alex - 40kg
  • Bench press
    • Tannys - 95, 115, 135lbs
    • Alex - 315lbs
  • Reverse pushups
    • Tannys - bodyweight
    • Alex - +45lbs
  • Hand-stand pushups
Although this was a simple workout, it was an effective one.  We were both pleased with our strength, particularly in our bench press where we both lifted challenging weights for multiple reps.

Keeping it simple worked for us in this upper body workout.  The AR7 lower body workout was great and challenging, but it wasn't possible to do two of those in a row.  The simple sets, with basic exercises and moderate rest periods was a welcome change of pace.  In some ways, it served as a reminder to not overlook the simple approach in life!
