Running With Makoto

Hey everyone,

In a few weeks, Alex will participate in the annual government charity (GCWCC) 5km run.  To prepare for this, we have started to do a weekly 5km run.  Although Alex's goal isn't to run with a fast time (~25 minute pace estimated), he wants to be comfortable during the run.

Since we have a dog (Makoto; or Mak, for short), we wanted to include him in our training.  He normally gets daily walks of 5-10km.  Thus, we weren't worried about the distance, although we weren't sure if he would be able to maintain the pace...

Support Infertility Awareness Week - May 19-26

Hey everyone,

This week is Infertility Awareness Week - a cause that is very important to me.  I see patients everyday who are suffering with fertility issues.  Infertility affects approximately 1 in 6 couples.  I guarantee you know someone suffering from infertility, even if you are not aware of their struggles.  Many couples suffer in silence because they are embarrassed or ashamed by this diagnosis.  However, infertility is a medical diagnosis, just like any other.  We need to continue to increase the public's awareness of infertility and the impact it has.

IAAC (Infertility Awareness Association of Canada) is a great resource  for Canadian couples suffering from infertility and they are organizing some amazing events this week to promote infertility awareness.

Celebrating one year of CoupleFit + the 2012 GCWCC 5km run!

Hey everyone,

We started this blog one year ago, following the 2011 GCWCC 5km run, which Alex participated in with his colleagues at work.  It's for a good cause - raising money for the Government of Canada's United Way charity campaign.

On October 11th, Alex participated in the 2012 GCWCC 5km run (also known as the GCWCC Wellness Challenge).  It was a colder day this year, but the sun was shining as the runners moved along the Ottawa river parkway.  Alex ran with Tyler (a veteran from last year's run) and Kelly.  The team managed a respectable time of 28 minutes - and had a good time throughout the run.

Not only was the run a great chance to get active for a good cause, but it allowed us to reflect on the last year and what we've accomplished in our fitness.  We've had hundreds of workouts, overcome injuries, set new personal records, and taken up new fitness activities (e.g. swimming).

Our next fitness goal is preparing for the HKC kettlebell certification, which we have signed up to do in Toronto in early December.  This is another milestone on our path of fitness and healthy lifestyle and will help us improve our kettlebell knowledge, form and give us the tools and techniques to officially train others.  We are really excited about this course and are looking forward to all of the fitness challenges and endeavours in the upcoming year!

Run for the Cure!

Hey everyone,

On Sunday, we participated in the Run for the Cure with Alex's mom (Kathy).  We signed up for the 5km run and raised money in honour of Lynne Small, a close friend of Kathy's.  It had been a while since we had gone for a run (as we have been swimming a lot lately for our cardio), so it was exciting to get outside and be a part of this event.

Gutsy Walk 2012

Hey everyone,

On June 10th, we had the opportunity to participate in the "Gutsy Walk" in support of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada.  This fundraising event, started in 1996, involves thousands of Canadians at almost 80 locations across Canada, with the aim to raise money to find a cure for inflammatory bowel disease.

Canada has one of the highest rates for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the world, with 1 in 160 Canadians being affected, and rates continue to increase.

The Beast has arrived!

Hey everyone,

When we got home from work, a package was waiting for us on our doorstep.  The Beast had arrived!  A month before, we had ordered a new kettlebell for Alex's birthday.  It was a special order from the U.S. - when we researched it online, we quickly discovered that this kettlebell is widely nicknamed 'the Beast'.

Walking with Bu

As warmer weather arrives and flowers start to bloom, people (and their dogs!) start venturing outside again.  This is the perfect time to re-incorporate outdoor activities into your daily routine.  One simple way to get some fresh air, while improving your health, is to walk!

5K Run for Reproductive Health in Orlando

Hi everyone,

We've been in Orlando for 3 days now and are having a great time!  This morning we awoke before the sun came up to participate in the 5K Run for Reproductive Health at the conference I am attending. Over 250 attendees had registered and the air was buzzing with excitement when we arrived.  Given our very minimal training for this run, we were a bit intimidated to see the fit people we were running with!

GCWCC 5km Charity Run!

On Thursday, October 6th, I (Alex) participated in the Government of Canada's 5km charity run for the United Way.  With only a couple of training runs for preparation, I set out with two colleagues.  We set a goal-time of 25 minutes, which was a challenging pace for us (based on our one previous group run).
