What Makes a Good Workout?

Hey everyone,

Since we last posted, we had several good workouts. Why were they good? These probably weren't the best workouts we've ever done. I don't think we could claim to have set any particular records, even if by our standards, we did lift heavy. We didn't outdo ourselves with frequency - admittedly, we're still getting in about 3 to 4 workouts a week. Sometimes it's a real challenge to fit a workout in.

And that's why these were such good workouts. They were good, because we did them. We came home from work and we were tired - and we didn't feel like lifting anything - and when we started lifting, it was tough and it hurt.

And they were good workouts because we kept going. We kept lifting because we believe in fitness and in ourselves. We kept going because we had set goals - and damn it, we are not going to cheat ourselves. We gave it 100% - each and every workout. And although it's not as if we're qualifying for the Olympics or setting a world record here, there was no doubt that it was our full, maximum effort.

Everyone has probably struggled, at some point in their fitness journey, with frustration. It is easy to get tired of working out, to become complacent, and to get distracted.

What is not as easy - and it's not glamorous like the movies or those flashy fitness commercials - is the hard work, behind the scenes.

It is putting in the time, consistently, over the years. It is keeping on going - through the valleys, not just up the peaks. It is about keeping yourself focused. It is about dedication. It is about fitness as a lifetime pursuit - not a short term fling.

Each and every time you push yourself to workout - where you overcome adversity and give it 100% - each of those workouts is good.  Each of those workouts is a victory.  Each of those workouts makes you better.  Each of those workouts will help you succeed.
