Can I use artificial sweeteners if I’m pregnant or trying to conceive?

It is hard to eliminate artificial sweeteners from your diet, since they are now
incorporated into so many food products. Luckily, it appears that most artificial
sweeteners are safe to consume in pregnancy, although research is still limited.

To identify food and beverages that contain artificial sweeteners, look for things labelled as "sugar-free" or "diet,".  These include, but are not limited to, soft drinks, gum, baked goods, candy, fruit juice, yogurt and ice cream.

Although Health Canada endorses using saccharin (Sweet ‘N Low®), some animal
studies have shown a higher risk of bladder cancer in offspring exposed in utero.  Saccharin is also noted to cross the placenta. Given the other alternatives available, it may be safer to avoid it.

Sweeteners such as aspartame (Nutrasweet®), sucralose (Splenda®) and stevioside
(Stevia®) appear to be safe, however consumption should be limited where possible. You can also consider using a more natural sweetener like honey, as long as it is pasteurized.
